Shell Script Example

What is shell script?

A shell is basically interface between us and Unix kernel.

A Unix / Linux shell is a command line interpreter or environment for user interaction for the Unix / Linux based operating system. In which we can execute command, combination of command, shell scripts read from the input device or from a file.

What can do shell?

If we have some to get task done. I we have get document printed. we issue a command to the Shell interprets the command and translate into the something that kernel understand.

What is kernel?

Kernel - the unix kernel is basically program that manage the hardware and system resources. What the kernel job in this case would be. It take instruction from the shell and further translated into the language that printer can understand thus the it get job done.


There are different shell available with Linux including

  • Bash (/bin/bash) Bourne again shell
  • C Shell (/bin/csh)
  • Turbo C Shell (/bin/tcsh)
  • Korn Shell (/bin/ksh)
